Understanding Sustainable Forestry Certifications and the Pending State Legislation for LEED
Tuesday October 29th • 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
MAX Credit Union Community Room
400 Eastdale Circle — Montgomery, AL 36117
Sam Hopkins is Manager of Sustainable Forestry for The Westervelt Company. Westervelt’s forest of 500,000 acres is certified to both the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) and the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Sam has worked for Westervelt for 39 years and in his current assignment helps coordinate sustainable forestry processes to maintain certification to the FSC and SFI standards.
The presentation will cover a history of the two certification schemes, along with the differences and similarities in the SFI and FSC standards. Our discussion will also include an introduction to PEFC, an international endorsement body, and an overview of the American Tree Farm System for small landowners. We will also discuss the proposed legislation involving the LEED standard and forest certification.
